Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) swung for experience, recalling pace legend Mohammad Amir and spin ace Imad Wasim for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand.

Both players recently reversed their retirements, setting their sights on the T20 World Cup later this year.

This selection bolsters Pakistan’s attack, filling the void left by Haris Rauf’s injury and Mohammad Nawaz’s struggles. Babar Azam will lead the 17-member squad, with the series kicking off on April 18th.

Pakistan has announced a dynamic squad for their upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, featuring a blend of experience and exciting young talent.

The selections come after the conclusion of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where several players impressed the national selectors.

Headlining the changes are the returns of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim. Amir, last seen in a Pakistan jersey in August 2020, brings a wealth of experience and raw pace to the attack. Wasim, who hasn’t played since November 2023, offers valuable spin options.

Their inclusion fills the void left by Haris Rauf’s injury and Mohammad Nawaz’s recent struggles.

Another intriguing addition is Usman Khan, who recently switched allegiance from the UAE. This talented all-rounder will be eager to prove his worth on the international stage.

The selectors have also shown faith in some breakout stars from the PSL. Azam Khan, who led Islamabad United to victory, retains his place. Shadab Khan, the PSL Player of the Tournament, returns after being dropped for the previous New Zealand series.

Young spinner Abrar Ahmed, who impressed with his bowling in the PSL, receives a well-deserved call-up.

Babar Azam takes back the reins as white-ball captain after a controversial selection process that saw Shaheen Shah Afridi stripped of the captaincy. Afridi remains in the squad alongside Naseem Shah, who rejoins the team after a long-term injury layoff.

Beyond the players, the backroom staff also sees a shake-up. Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood joins as the temporary head coach, leaving his role as assistant coach at Surrey.
