Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have bolstered their spin attack with the signing of 22-year-old Sri Lankan leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth. This comes after Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of IPL 2024 due to a chronic heel issue.
Viyaskanth, despite his young age, boasts an impressive resume. He holds the record for being the youngest player in the Lanka Premier League and has already represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Games. He recently showcased his talent at the ILT20, grabbing eight wickets for champions MI Emirates.
This exciting prospect will be mentored by another Sri Lankan legend, Muttiah Muralitharan, the bowling coach for SRH. With 42 wickets in just 33 T20 matches, Viyaskanth offers promise and could be a valuable asset for Hyderabad, especially as pitches dry out later in the tournament.
While SRH will miss the experience of Hasaranga, Viyaskanth’s potential and recent form make him a compelling replacement.
